The private worlds of youra
From “Flicker” to “MIMI” and “Motif”, three songs follow youra’s personal writing through a changing circle of collaborators.

Car, the garden first heard “Flicker” as a demo in Korean singer-songwriter youra’s studio. According to the release notes for her 2019 debut EP, B side, he offered to feature on it there and then. The song’s words and music were hers; he arranged it and joined her on vocals. It is an early example of a recurring arrangement in her work: personal writing developed with another musician. [1]
“Flicker” (깜빡): close enough to hesitate
The song opens with an embrace beneath a flickering streetlight. Later, its speaker wonders whether an apparent connection is only their own imagining. There are small details of time spent together, but being close does not settle the question of what either person means to the other. By the time the speaker asks to stay hidden, the hesitation has become as important as the intimacy. [2]
“Flicker” was one of B side’s two title tracks, alongside “Dance”. The EP also includes “Laundry”, another collaboration with him, this time with U-Turn sharing composition and arrangement credits. [1] [3]
“MIMI” (미미): asking to be found
On “MIMI”, from the 2021 EP GAUSSIAN, the request changes. Its speaker calls to an absent Mimi, questions why love disappears, and asks a friend to find them. Set beside the wish to hide in “Flicker”, that appeal makes an illuminating contrast. Read as separate scenes, they show how youra can write both the impulse to withdraw and the wish for someone to come looking. [5] [2]
Here her writing partner is Cosmic Boy, who co-composed and arranged the track; youra wrote the lyrics, and Kim Chunchu played guitar. “MIMI” earned a nomination for Best R&B & Soul Song at the 2022 Korean Music Awards. The performance here comes from ONSTAGE × D Museum. [4] [6] [7]
“Motif” (구운듯한 얼굴이 너의 모티프): a little farther
By June 2023, youra was preparing her first full-length album. Speaking to Go Youngjin for Allure Korea, she credited her recent collaboration with the band Mandong with giving her confidence. She described bringing some jazz elements into the new record, while keeping other songs closer to the band sound of her earlier work. The collaboration had opened possibilities without giving the whole album a single new genre. [8]
“Motif”, released that July on the album listed in English as (1), was co-composed with Mandong bassist Song Namhyun, who also arranged it. It went on to win Best R&B & Soul Song at the 2024 Korean Music Awards—the category in which “MIMI” had previously been nominated. [9] [10] [13] [6]
The lyrics give us a sinking sandcastle and a garden where eternity was promised. Those images put something fragile beside something supposedly lasting. The invitation to walk a little farther lets the song continue past that tension without explaining it away. A few objects and a small movement carry the feeling; the listener is left room to work out how they belong together. [9]
In the Allure interview, youra described her lyrics as closer to a diary than fiction. That offers a way into their intimacy, without making every image a literal account of her life. She also resisted prescribing how people should hear her music, acknowledging that each listener would feel differently. The player above presents the artist’s official audio of “Motif”. [8] [11]
A connection youra makes herself
There is a recent link back to these earlier songs. Discussing her July 2026 EP Brush with Melon’s Track Zero, youra singled out “Bathtub” (목욕탕) as recognisably her own kind of song. She suggested comparing it with “MIMI” or “Laundry”. She also explained its flute part: she had briefly learned the instrument as a child and remained drawn to it. [12] [14]
